Pig keeping course for beginners
Watchingwell Saddlebacks, based on the beautiful Isle of Wight was started in 2005 and has been very active in the breeding of excellent progeny a good number of which are now existing throughout the UK in various Saddleback herds . Major success has been achieved on the show circuit often gaining champion pig in all the County shows from Cornwall through to the Great Yorkshire show and all points East and West.
Building on this success David and Sharon Groves who have been frequently asked for advice from various people interested in keeping pigs and from some of their weaner recipient customers, have decided to introduce a beginner and more advanced pig keeping course based at their 15 acre smallholding on the Island.
Covering all aspects of pig keeping from handling, breeding , legislation, feeding, pork production and so on the course will run for one day with hands on experience with our pigs as well as some classroom time to enhance your understanding of pig keeping.
Your instructors are David Groves a qualified further education teacher(cert of ed) with many years experience as an agricultural merchant owner responsible for advising many farmers in nutritional and legislative matters with over 50 years experience in this field.
Sharon Groves, David's wife is the principle show person in the firm, gaining much success over the years and a great deal of respect from her fellow showing owners. She has a tremendous ability to recognise quality livestock ,something she would be able to pass on to potential beginners and enable them to be competent at pig handling by the completion of the course.
Both partners are senior committee members of the British Saddleback Breeders Club , Sharon being the show secretary and David the newsletter editor and participants in the course will be encouraged to join the BSBC to help them establish their pig keeping activities .
